Sen. Kamala Harris announces presidential campaign

The 2020 presidential election now has another candidate competing to call the Oval Office their own.

California Sen. Kamala Harris announced on Jan. 21 that she will run for president in 2020. Harris made her first announcement at a rally in Oakland, California and later appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America to discuss her candidacy further.

Harris said, “With faith in God, with fidelity to country, and with the fighting spirit that I got from my mother, I stand before you today to announce my candidacy for President of the United States.”

During her speech in Oakland, Harris discussed her previous achievements as the Senator of California and gave a glimpse of what she will be standing for if she is elected president. The crowd held signs with her campaign slogan, “Kamala Harris For The People”.

In her time as Senator of California, Harris has advocated for the fight against transnational gangs, sexual assault, white supremacy and stood up for human rights.

Harris challenged citizens everywhere to take a step back and think about what’s happening in our country each day and said, “We must answer a fundamental question: Who are we, as Americans? America, we are better than this.”

Harris also touched on the current state of the presidency and her views on what needs to be changed. She referred to President Trump’s efforts to build a border wall as a “medieval vanity project”.

“The American dream and our American democracy are under attack and on the line like never before,” Harris said.

If elected, Harris promises medicare for all, universal prepay and debt-free college, and the largest tax cut in more than a generation.

In order to make all of these things happen she said, “We will pay for it by reversing this administration’s giveaways to the top one percent.”

Harris also made it clear that her campaign is one of togetherness and change that will fight for all people. Her advocacy, if elected, will be used in the fight for the survivors and the dreamers.

Harris said, “You are not invisible. We all stand together.”

Five Questions I Would Ask Sen. Harris

If given the chance at her rally, I would have asked Sen. Harris the following five questions: If you’re elected, what will be the very first move you will make as President of the United States? How exactly will you reverse the money that has already been given to the top 1%? Do you worry that biased voters won’t take you seriously? How do you plan on changing the minds of those who currently wouldn’t give you their vote? What is the one thing, if elected, you refuse to leave the presidency without doing?
